Today was the first ever annual Black Women in Denmark Picnic! Thankfully, the weather held up and we were able to talk about everything from Danish Immigration Laws to the implementation of Apartheid in South Africa (I really need to read more about that). The mood was positive and inspirational and in the end, I couldn't have asked to be surrounded by a more dynamic group of women. So hats off to all you fierce women that I am lucky enough to know, and I look forward to many more gatherings here in Denmark & throughout Europe! Special thanks to Adrianne for coming down here from Sweden, Clarice, Priscilla, Doreen, Paulette and Nize for their contributions toward making this event a success!

classroom scribble by Diab, g. 6 Life, it is has always been said, is the ultimate creation and I have recently thrown myself into it like there will be no tomorrow. Instead of beating myself up for projects still unfinished, I realize that every interaction I have is, in the end, the ultimate expression. What if what occurs between two people, whether on a train during rush hour, or in the comfort of their own home is tantamount to experiencing the true essence of what it is that life has to offer? That said, I really attempt to treat each and every interaction as an authentic expression of myself. This means not acting out of frustration, anger, or hurt but out of a higher plane of recognizing the magic inherent in another human being. I am not always successful. But I try. This means acting with grace when someone asks me something like, "Why do Black women spend so much time on their hair?" This means not wanting to slap the crap out of someone who rushes past m...
The fact of the matter is that no matter how well you have adjusted to your new life abroad, you will always be visited by a nagging longing to go home. This longing does not reveal itself constantly, but instead chooses to hide behind your happiness and optimism until, well, you realize that although you may even think of your new country as home, you will never, ever be really home until-- Until what? My theory is that this longing will always surface and that you must get better at combating it. The truth is, I can't move back to the U.S. now. If I didn't have a child, it would be another story... This weekend my son sprained his ankle. But before we knew it was a sprain, I had to take him to the emergency room to ensure that it was not broken. We showed up at what was a very quiet emergency room. We both were well-armed: I had my students' work to correct, my son his psp and new Tony Hawk game. The wait was not long and the staff, pleasant. "You speak perfect Danis...
