originality, june 2012

I really like the kids at my job. I really do.
Each child is such a fascinating facet of humanity--holding so much potential!
If there is a feeling I am certain of, it's that feeling of belonging I felt the first day I walked into that school.
I see it especially among the kids of color...they seem relieved to see someone who looks like them, in front of a classroom.
This is one of the reasons I have done what I have done so far.
I didn't tell you that I'm now teaching my son 7th grade English, right?
Yes, he did move to my school. Before moving, he asked, "I don't understand how you and dad could have sent me to that Danish school. I could understand if you two were like, normal Danes, but--".
He seems to be loving it & he landed in one of my all-time favourite classes, you know, the one who did the Seed last year? Funky bunch of kids, I tell you.
But teaching is not something I can continue to do back to back. I've been at this job for 4 years...I'm starting to itch for something different. Perhaps it would not involve my leaving the school permanantly...maybe it will. I do have to face the fact that I don't particularly want to grow old in Denmark...although I have already started the process...
But where, where, where????
I just started another translation job. Danes are funny. They really think they can translate themselves. Seriously. And many don't want to pay the going rate...which is a bummer. I mean, it sucks living in a foreign country and the few valuable skills you have, no one wants to PAY! A single mother with a kid...hello! Yeah, it just dawned on me that I am the single bread-winner in this household... But I have been pretty good with the translation gigs--doing a lot of cool jobs and meeting interesting people.
Is a show in order? A reading? I'm gearing up for something, cause something gotta change!!!!

My 7th graders from last year took that picture. I took them up to Tisvilde, one of my favourite summer spots in Denmark...although I don't recommend it high season.
