OPEN CALL
FOR ARTISTS
IN RESIDENCE
Deadline Sun. May 17th
Join Flux, become a Fluxer
For the past decade, Flux Factory has offered an informal, artist-run, and collective residency program comprised of a changing community of creative collaborators. Until now, this program has operated “organically” and been self-organized. We are opening a new home this July and are setting in motion an expanded, professionalized, artist-run residency program. We're now accepting applications for residents!
Deadline for the online application is Sunday May 17th 2009.
If you are interested in applying, carefully review the following guidelines, as well as our Residency FAQs before filling in the online application.
As Fluxers, artists will be able to get involved in all of Flux Factory’s programming, including the Flux Factory exhibitions and public programs, as well as technology training initiatives and workshops. Residents take part in public artist talks as well as studio visits with curators, critics, and gallery owners from the New York arts scene. In our new location we also have a project space gallery devoted to solo and group exhibitions of work by resident artists.
Flux Factory residents are free to use all facilities and resources including the soon-to-be-built woodshop, tools, silk-screening facilities, A/V and computer equipment, as well as have access to other city programs such as Materials for the Arts. We also have a peer-mentorship program wherein artists share their skills with each other. Of course, Flux Artists in Residence are not onl y free to join our public programs, but are encouraged to suggest some of their own.
Fluxhood
Flux Factory is a communally run live and work center. All residents take part in the creation and maintenance of the Flux facilities and programming. That means doing weekly chores, putting in volunteer hours to home improvements, and attending weekly Monday night meetings. Our premises are new and we are renovating them with a large group of volunteers. Together, we’ll be arranging life at the new Flux building, so expect a changing environment, lots of learning together through experience, and many opportunities to leave your mark!
Criteria
The Flux Factory residency is tailored to American and international artists of all mediums and practices. We also welcome cultural producers of all stripes, activists, academics, and anyone who’s creative and adventurous and willing to come to New York City to create new bodies of work that are informed by their experience here.
New Building
Our new building offers both living and work accommodations for Artists in Residence. Unlike other programs in New York, the Flux Factory residencies are fully artist-run. We offer not only a welcoming community of artists with which to exchange ideas and learn, but also accommodations, work facilities, and direct exhibition opportunities. It's located one subway stop into Queens, on the N/W/7 lines, and is also very close to the E/R/V/G and not too far from the F.
Cost & Duration
Presently, Flux Factory does not offer individual financial support. Fluxers are responsible for securing the cost of a live or work studio for the duration of their stay. The cost of available spaces ranges from $500 to $1300, which includes access to our programming, exhibition spaces, and work facilities. (Expenses such as electricicity, heating, internet, or shared food are considered utilities and are shared equally between residents.)
Selection
Residents are selected by a jury comprised of our Advisory Committee, a group of specially invited artists, curators, administrators, and intellectuals who serve in an advisory capacity. The committee will meet shortly after the designated deadline of our online application.
Timeline
The deadline for online submissions is Sunday, May 17th. 2009. Selected artists in the final roster will be contacted on Thursday May 21st to assess availability and commitment towards the program. We will meet with those who make it to the final round on the evening of Monday, May 25th and will notify everyone by May 30th.
